Introduction

September 16th, 2008

Welcome! I go by D, and I’m also a beer enthusiast. Three of my favorite things in the world are traveling, drinking, and learning about new cultures. E and I recently took a trip that fused all three of those passions, and we’ve created this website to serve as a tool and an inspiration for others like us.

In a world that is increasingly globalized and homogenous, it is becoming vanishingly difficult to travel and have an experience that isn’t prepackaged for mass consumption. As a student living in Manhattan, I see this every day. Tour buses packed with tourists drive past my apartment several times an hour; yet few if any of those tourists will ever get a feel for the New York that exists beyond the landmarks. There’s no good reason it has to be this way.

Beer may seem like an odd choice of a cultural passport, but there are few other conventions so nearly universally celebrated as a good glass of beer. In fact, at one time or another, beer has been brewed and enjoyed in nearly every area of the globe. Together with the sociability associated with drinking, this makes beer the perfect jumping-off point for any exploration. When you enjoy a local brew, or at least a local pub, you get the chance to see the local spin on a tradition shared the world over. Chances are that you’ll also meet more than a few natives.

Obligatory First Post

Hi all,

I’m The Dude (not to be confused with The Dude of Lebowski lore, though I concede he is influential), and welcome to the beersurfing.com blog. Treehorn and I travel the world looking for good times and good beer.  We created Beersurfing to highlight the greatest beers and breweries this planet has to offer, and tell the world the good, the bad, and the ugly about whatever and wherever we have stumbled upon to drink.  I am a 24 year old IT consultant and web developer living in Phoenix, Arizona; I’m also a fly-by-night slacker that enjoys a good beer and don’t mind going a long way to get it.  I do not claim to be a beer expert by any means – I simply appreciate having a good drink when I’m a long way from home and telling you all about it, whether it’s over lunch, over dinner, or just because.

I hope you enjoy what we’ll be doing with the site in the coming weeks. Thanks for visiting!
